French Open finalist Samantha Stosur, the sixth seed, saw her successful year tarnished by a shock first-round exit to Kaia Kanepi at Wimbledon.
The Australian has been one of the form players in the women's game this season - she had 35 wins to her name in 2010 coming into this one - but she fell to a 6-4 6-4 reverse against the Estonian.
Stosur worked enough presentable opportunities to vanquish her opponent, but she took just one of the seven break points on offer.
Serena Williams showed why she is such a fearsome performer on grass during her dominant first-round victory over Michelle Larcher De Brito. The top seed, who has three Wimbledon titles to her name, was barely troubled as she breezed to a routine 6-0 6-4 success.
Williams fired a warning shot to the rest of the field as she blew her opponent away during the first set, clinching it after just 22 minutes had elapsed.
Williams' total superiority was underlined by the first-serve statistics - the American did not drop a point there in the contest. She sealed her first win on grass in 2010 having unleashed five times as many winners as Larcher De Brito - and without conceding a break point.
Two-time quarter finalist Agnieszka Radwanska had no problem overcoming the serve-and-volley tactics of her powerful adversary Melinda Czink. The No. 7 seed fired a range of passing shots to her opponent's flanks en route to a straightforward 6-3 6-3 victory.
Tenth seed Flavia Pennetta may have struggled with her serve, but those difficulties could not stop her breezing into the round of 64 with a 6-4 6-0 win against Anabel Medina Garrigues.
Svetlana Kuznetsova has had a terrible year - she has not been beyond a quarter-final in 2010 - but her game showed signs of recovery as she eventually edged out big-serving Akgul Amanmuradova 6-2 6-7 6-4 over two hours.
Caroline Wozniacki has struggled with injury in recent weeks, but she looked in prime form in her first-round clash with Tatiana Garbin - claiming a 6-1 6-1 success on No. 1 Court.
