Murray to receive honorary degree from University of Stirling

Andy Murray will be presented with an honorary degree by the University of Stirling on Wednesday - the university he trained at as a boy.

Along with the degree, awarded to the British No.1 for his outstanding contribution to tennis, Murray will also receive the Freedom of the City by Stirling Council during a council meeting in his home town of Dunblane.

"I am honoured and very grateful to receive this award from the University of Stirling - an institution which is recognised internationally for its sports research and facilities," Murray said.

"I trained on the courts at the Scottish National Tennis Centre at the University of Stirling when I was growing up and I remember playing against the students, which was great fun.

"I know there are many talented junior players practising there every day and I'd encourage them to keep working hard towards their goals."

However Murray, who ended Britain's 77-year wait for a Wimbledon champion last summer, endured a torrid flight from Paris, where he was training with coach Daniel Vallverdu, to London on Monday.

Murray split from former coach Ivan Lendl in March after a two-year partnership and revealed he would discuss plans for a new appointment with his team during his time off before the Madrid Masters in May.
