Top seed Roger Federer continued to look far from his best as he progressed into the third round at Wimbledon at the expense of Ilija Bozoljac.
The defending champion, who survived a scare against Alejandro Falla in the first round, looked to be on course for a routine victory but dropped another set as he moved past the Serbian 6-3 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(5).
Andy Roddick survived a scare before booking his place in the third round with a 4-6 6-4 6-1 7-6(2) win over Michael Llodra.Last year's beaten finalist made a slow start and was second best to Llodra in the opening set which was secured with one break of serve.
Roddick came into the game with a 2-0 head-to-head record against Llodra, but looked out of sorts during the second set as he struggled to make any impact on the Frenchman's serve. However, Llodra's serve went to pieces in the 10th game of the second set as he double faulted and threw a volley into the net to hand Roddick the set.
The No. 5 seed took great confidence from levelling the match and exerted his class on the match in a one-sided third set. Llodra, who performed so well at Queen's a fortnight ago, took the fourth set to a tiebreak but the greater power of Roddick came to the fore as he wrapped up victory in two hours and 23 minutes.
Mardy Fish failed to join his fellow American Roddick in the third round, as Florian Mayer claimed a 6-7(2) 6-3 6-4 6-4 win, while 16th seed Jurgen Melzer needed five sets to beat Viktor Troicki 6-7(5) 4-6 6-3 7-6 6-3.
Third seed Novak Djokovic made light work of his second round opponent Taylor Dent as he booked his place in round three with a 7-6(5) 6-1 6-4 victory. However, seventh seed Nikolay Davydenko, who narrowly avoided defeat to Kevin Anderson in the first round, was the victim of an upset at the hands of Germany's Daniel Brands. The Russian, who is on the comeback from a wrist injury, fell in three sets 7-6(5) 7-6(8) 6-1.
Also through is No. 12 seed Tomas Berdych, who eased past Germany's Benjamin Becker 7-5 6-3 6-4. Meanwhile Lleyton Hewitt is looking to build on his win in Halle and he was firmly in control at 6-4 6-4 3-0 when Evgeny Korolev retired.
Gael Monfils is next in line for Hewitt after the French No. 21 seed defeated Karol Beck 6-4 6-4 7-6(4) 6-4.
