Defending champion Serena Williams stormed into the third round of Wimbledon with a ruthless 6-0 6-1 win over Russia's Anna Chakvetadze.

The three-time Wimbledon champion had been moved onto Court Two by All England Club officials as play on Centre Court dragged on, but the less glamourous setting did little to put the world No. 1 off her task.

Williams hit 27 winners and won the first 11 games as she swept her way past Chakvetadze in 49 minutes. The Russian eventually broke her duck at 5-0 in the second, drawing a rousing reception from the crowd, but that would be the only moment of joy for the world No. 118 as Williams sealed the deal by winning the next game.

"I was really focused," Williams said. "When I saw the draw I thought 'oh my god' because she used to be a top ten player.

"I knew I had to be super serious. It wasn't hard to maintain that intensity because she is such a good player."

Third seed Caroline Wozniacki booked her place in the third round with a 6-4 6-3 victory over Kai-Chen Chang.

The 19-year-old dominated the match from the outset, sealing a 6-4 6-3 victory in an hour and 17 minutes. The former Wimbledon girls' champion moved a step closer to a potential semi-final match-up against top seed Serena Williams with a mature display against the Wimbledon debutant.

Wozniacki grabbed an early break to take a 2-1 lead in the opening set, before serving out for the set in under 40 minutes. Chang battled valiantly and saved five break points in the second set, but it was merely delaying the inevitable before Wozniacki finally made her breakthrough.

The world No. 4 will now meet Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in round three after the Russian beat Roberta Vinci 6-2 7-6(1).

Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova fired a warning to her rivals as she stormed into the round of 32 with a comfortable win over Romania's Ioana Raluca Olaru. The No. 16 seed is on the comeback trail after shoulder injury last year, and looked in ominous form as she cruised to a 6-4 6-1 victory.

Sharapova will now meet Barbora Zahlavova Strycova after the world No. 68 came from behind to beat No. 24 seed Daniela Hantuchova 1-6 6-2 6-4.

Two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova crashed to a surprise exit as she slipped to a three-set defeat against Anastasia Rodionova, going down 6-4 2-6 6-4.

No. 18 seed Aravane Rezai will also the victim of a second-round shock as she was ousted from the draw by Klara Zakopalova in an entertaining three-set upset. No. 23 seed Zheng Jie will join Rezai on the list of surprise losers after she fell to a 6-42-6 6-2 defeat aginst Petra Kvitova.

No. 7 seed Agnieszka Radwanska dropped two games as she rolled past Alberta Brianti, while China's Na Li, the No. 10 seed, saw off Japanese qualifier Kurumi Nara 6-2 6-4.

Flavia Pennetta and Victoria Azarenka both enjoyed comfortable passages into the third round as they downed Monica Niculescu and Bojana Jovanovski respectively.

There were also wins for Alexandra Dulgheru, Kaia Kanepi, Dominika Cibulkova and Sara Errani.
