Bouchard breaks WTA duck in Germany

Eugenie Bouchard claimed her first WTA title when she defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-2 4-6 6-3 on Saturday to win the Nuremberg Cup.

Second seed Bouchard, who had not lost a set on the way to her second final of the year, held her nerve in the third set after five breaks of serve in a row to win in just shy of two hours.

Pliskova had beaten top-seeded Angelique Kerber and No.4 Elina Svitolina to reach the final and the Czech showed her fighting qualities to win four games in a row and level the match from 6-2 4-2 down.

But she was unable to claim her second career title after earning her maiden win in Kuala Lumpur last year.

Canadian Bouchard, 20, had won the only previous match-up between the pair in the first round of the 2013 US Open.

"I'm really proud of myself," world No.19 Bouchard said. "I worked really hard this week."

Bouchard came into the tournament on the back of a three-match losing streak on clay, and she added: "I love clay now!"

Ernests Gulbis maintained his perfect record in finals as he swept aside Federico Delbonis 6-1 7-6(5) to win the Open de Nice - his sixth tournament victory on the ATP Tour.

Elsewhere, Philipp Kohlschreiber claimed his fifth ATP trophy by defeating Ivo Karlovic 6-2 7-6(4) in the Dusseldorf Open final.
