Heather Watson's run at the French Open has come to an end after the British No.2 was beaten in straight sets by Simona Halep.

Watson, who beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in the first round after coming through three qualifying matches to reach the main draw, suffered a 6-2 6-4 loss to the fourth seed and 2008 French Open junior champion.

"Today was tough," Watson said. "Simona played very well, as I knew she would. I don't think I was on my best game. I made a lot more unforced errors than I usually do, and I thought my first serve percentage wasn't very high.

"But at the end of the day, she made hardly any unforced errors and she made me make my unforced errors, so you have to give her credit for that."

Petra Kvitova reached the third round after the 2011 Wimbledon champion clinched a 6-4 6-4 win over Marina Erakovic, with 2008 French Open winner Ana Ivanovic beating Elina Svitolina 7-5 6-2.

Sara Errani, runner-up at Roland Garros two years ago, defeated Dinah Pfizenmaier 6-2 6-4, while three-time semi-finalist Jelena Jankovic beat Kurumi Nara 7-5 6-0.

Kristina Mladenovic followed up her impressive victory over Australian Open champion and second seed Li Na by overcoming Alison Riske 7-6(5) 3-6 6-3.
