Roger Federer has backed the decision of Andy Murray to appoint Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach.

Murray announced the move to hire the former women's world No.1 on Sunday as Ivan Lendl's replacement - who split with Murray in March following a successful partnership which saw Murray win Wimbledon, the US Open and the gold medal at the London 2012 Olympics.

"There were rumours in Paris about them working together. I think it is very interesting. I think it's great and only time will tell if it is going to be successful or not," Federer said.

Federer, who is preparing for the defence of his title at Halle this week, believes Murray has made a "great choice" to have the two-time Grand Slam champion on board.

"But Andy has always been open to try out things or go in a different direction with Ivan Lendl, with Brad Gilbert as well and now with Amelie Mauresmo," he added.

"I remember being at the Champion's dinner with her at one of my Wimbledon victories.

"I always enjoyed watching her play and she is a true professional. So from that standpoint, I think it's a great choice and I hope they're going to be a successful team together."
