Watson out in Edgbaston first round

British No.1 Heather Watson fell at the first hurdle in the Aegon Classic at Edgbaston as she was knocked by Canadian qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak.

Watson dominated the opening set and had three match points in the second at 6-2 5-4, but Wozniak battled back to take it to a third as she won six games in a row, eventually taking the match 2-6 7-5 6-4.

Watson's defeat rules out a second-round meeting with Johanna Konta, the last Briton left in the competition after she defeated 14th-seed Kurumi Nara 6-3 6-1.

While Watson struggled, there were no such problems for No.1-seed Ana Ivanovic, who eased past Mona Barthel 6-4 6-1.

Barthel had threatened to be a tricky first-round opponent for Ivanovic, having won two of the past three matches between the pair, while the Serb also went into the match off the back of a disappointing third-round exit at the French Open. But Ivanovic was too strong as she closed out the clash in just over an hour.

Earlier in the day, 16th-seed Casey Dellacqua breezed past Urszula Radwanska 6-1 6-3, while 12th-seed Monica Puig was taken to three sets by Stefanie Voegele but edged through 6-7(3) 6-2 6-2.
