Jealousy eats up injured Robson

Laura Robson has struggled to cope with her extended absence from tennis because of a wrist injury that has now ruled her out of the US Open.

British No.2 Robson missed the French Open after undergoing surgery in April and will be at Wimbledon only in a capacity as a pundit for the BBC as she continues her recovery.

"I went through a very, very depressed stage," Robson, a former Wimbledon junior champion, told BBC Sport. "I didn't go on any tennis websites because I was so jealous of everyone able to play.

"I didn't look at the live scores, and I didn't watch any tennis on TV. But now I'm kind of past that and I'm looking forward to being able to watch Wimbledon as a spectator for once."

Robson was forced to withdraw from the ASB Classic in New Zealand in December when the injury flared up and she retired from the Hobart International a week later.

She was thrashed by Kirsten Flipkens at the Australian Open in her only full match in 2013, with her world ranking slipping from 46 to 80.

However, Robson will be stepping up her recovery in August - when the US Open takes place - and has set her sights on a return before Melbourne next year.

"At the moment it's kind of a day-to-day thing in terms of pain and how the inflammation is going, but rehab seems to be coming along nicely," she added.

"I'd still like to be able to play some matches at the end of this year and get some competitive tennis in before Australia.

"I'm basically going to be playing some very small tournaments to try and get my ranking up again."
