Serena Williams cruised into the second round at Wimbledon after she dispatched Anna Tatishvili 6-1 6-2 on Centre Court.

A five-time Wimbledon winner, Williams made light work of Tatishvili, but was not at her fluent best as her service again struggled in the opening stages of a grand slam; the first game in which she served, Williams had to fight off six deuces in order to hold.

However Williams, who lost in the second round at the French Open, hit 31 winners and eventually made 16 aces during her triumph.

Williams told the BBC: "Last time I played Anna Tatishvili, she ended the match by making it really tough. Today, she started where she finished in that match. She can hit the ball really hard, but I was ready for that.

"I fell so many times during the match, which was weird but it was probably just a case of getting my bearings. I didn't play much grass-court tennis last year. I think I'll be OK.

"The reaction from the crowd has been great. I love playing at Wimbledon. You dream of playing here when you're really young. To still be playing here is a great honour for me. Every time I step out on that court, it makes me want to keep coming back here for years and years and years."

Earlier on day two at SW19, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal both enjoyed winning starts in the men's draw while Caroline Wozniacki and Heather Watson made it safely through their first round matches.

Ana Ivanovic advanced with a 7-6(6) 6-4 win against Francesca Schiavone after an hour and a half of play on Court No.1. Third seed Simona Halep saw off Teliana Pereira with a 6-2 6-2 triumph, while 15th seed Carla Suarez Navarro won through in straight sets.

Elsewhere, Great Britain's Tara Moore will be back on day three after she forced a deciding set in her first round clash with Vera Zvonareva. That match is currently locked at 4-6 7-6(3). If victorious, Moore will be the fourth Brit to make it through to the second round.
