US Open champions to earn record payout

The men's and women's singles champions at this year's US Open will earn a record payout of £1.75 million after the prize money pool went up by 11.7%.

A total of £22.3m will be paid out at the final Grand Slam of the year in New York - which begins on August 25 - meaning the tournament has increased the amount it is paying out by 64.6% in the last three years.

Last year's US Open champions Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams each pocketed £1.5m for their victories over Novak Djokovic and Victoria Azarenka.

But the prize fund is still short of what was on offer at Wimbledon, which this year had a total pool of £25m, with champions Novak Djokovic and Petra Kvitova each earning £1.76m.

The Australian Open at the beginning of 2014 had a total prize fund of £19.3m, while the French Open's prize money pool was £20.1m .

Dave Haggerty, chairman of the United States Tennis Association (USTA), said: "Last year to recognise the importance of the players and the key role they have in building our sport, the USTA shared our vision to reach £29.2m ($50m) in prize money at the US Open by 2017.

"This year's prize money increase continues the commitment to make the US Open one of the most lucrative purses in all sports."
