Two-time major winner Li Na has withdrawn from the US Open due to a knee injury that has troubled her for several months.

China's Li, the world No.2, also pulled out from tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati over the next two weeks, which would have acted as her hard-court preparation for the US Open, which begins on August 25.

Li wrote on her official Facebook page that she has been struggling with the knee problem since March. "It is just not where I need it to be in order to play at the highest level," Li added.

"My medical team has advised me that I need to take some time off to rest my knee."

Li hasn't played since her straight-sets defeat to Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova in the third round at Wimbledon, where she had her right knee taped up.

Li won her second major at the Australian Open in January, following her French Open triumph in 2011.

In May, Li was knocked out of Roland Garros in the third round by a player ranked No. 103 in the world.

It's the second significant injury news in two days with regards to the US Open. On Wednesday, Rafael Nadal revealed he injured his right wrist in practice and would miss hard-court events in Toronto and Cincinnati, although he holds out hope of defending his title at Flushing Meadows.
