  • British No.1 Heather Watson's run at the Rogers Cup came to an end in the third round after she suffered a straight-sets defeat to Victoria Azarenka.
  • Eighth seed Azarenka eased to a 6-2 6-4 victory in Montreal, to set up a meeting with Agnieszka Radwanska after she beat Sabine Lisicki 6-1 3-6 6-3.

The Spaniard returned from the second delay to break Sharapova's serve and then fought off a break point in the next game thanks to a lucky net cord. She broke again in the final game.

The 25 year old won her first WTA tournament this year at the Portugal Open in May. Fourth seed Sharapova had struggled to a three-set win in her opening match on Wednesday against Garbine Muguruza.

Serena Williams advanced to last eight with ease but had to wait out a brief rain delay to beat Czech Lucie Safarova 7-5 6-4.

Top seed Williams returned to play last week in Stanford and won her tour-best fourth title of the season. The event was her first since she withdrew from a doubles match at Wimbledon because of a viral illness.

Williams has won the Rogers Cup three times when it is held on alternate years in Toronto, including last year, but she had not played in Montreal since she retired from the final with an injury in 2000.

Earlier, Caroline Wozniacki routed Shelby Rogers 6-1 6-0 to extend her run of one-sided victories. Rogers had upset local favourite Eugenie Bouchard on Tuesday.
