Williams beats BFF Wozniacki to set up Venus clash

Serena Williams woke up after a listless start to outlast Caroline Wozniacki 4-6 7-5 7-5 in the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup on Friday to set up a last four clash with sister Venus.

Williams, the defending champion and world's top-ranked player, has won 14 straight matches at the tournament.

Williams was down a set and a break before she started hitting the lines. She needed 2 hours 41 minutes to win.

"I was making a lot of unforced errors in general," Williams said. "But I just thought: 'Just keep fighting. Hopefully I can just hold on and hold on, try to break, keep going for each shot.'

"I just never wanted to stop."

There were five service breaks in the third set. Williams clinched victory with the last one on her third match point. Williams is now 7-1 against Wozniacki.

"Especially when you play someone like Caroline or other opponents, you know your match might be a little longer than normal," Williams said. "You go in there thinking: 'This is not going to be routine.' You're ready."

She will meet her sister in the semi-finals after Venus Williams beat Carla Suarez Navarro 4-6 6-2 6-3 to reach the final four.

Wozniacki, coming off a win at Istanbul, had won eight matches in a row. She broke for a 3-2 first-set lead and fought off two break points to close the set.

"It was really small things that did it out there today," she said. "She came up with quite a few big serves when she needed to. It could have gone both ways."

In the other quarter-finals, third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska beat Victoria Azarenka 6-2 6-2, and Ekaterina Makarova edged Coco Vandeweghe 6-1 4-6 6-1.
