Birthday boy Federer books semi-final spot
Roger Federer celebrated his 33rd birthday in style by reaching the semi-finals of the Rogers Cup in Toronto following a 6-3 4-6 6-3 victory over David Ferrer.
The record 17-time Grand Slam champion overcame Marin Cilic in the previous round after two hours and 39 minutes in three sets, and once again he was taken to a deciding set, but this time he secured victory in an hour and 53 minutes to reach the last four.
"I was able to find energy and really serve better at the very end, which was key against David because he was doing a really good job on my second serve to put me under pressure," Federer said.
Federer will take on Feliciano Lopez in the semi-finals after the Spaniard beat home-favourite Milos Raonic 6-4 6-7(5) 6-3.
"With Milos, I have to be aggressive, because if not, he's going to dominate," Lopez said.
"I have been [playing] this game the whole week and it was working perfectly. So for me there was no reason to change it while playing Milos today."
