Ward through as Tsonga suffers early exit
James Ward secured a shock three-sets win over Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez to move into the second round of the Cincinnati Masters.
The British No.2 sealed a 6-2 3-6 6-1 win and will now meet France's Julien Benneteau or Slovenia's Blaz Rola in the second round.
Elsewhere, there was a shock as Rogers Cup winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga followed his week of big upsets by suffering an early exit in Cincinnati on Tuesday.
Tsonga lost 6-1 6-4 to Mikhail Youzhny in only 68 minutes, just two days after beating Roger Federer in Montreal for his second Masters title.
Andy Murray, who was beaten by Tsonga in the Montreal quarter-finals, begins his Cincinnati campaign against Portugal's Joao Sousa on Wednesday, having been given a bye in the first round.
