Del Potro fails to recover for Flushing Meadows
Juan Martin del Potro has pulled out of the US Open as he continues to recover from wrist surgery.
Del Potro, who won his only grand slam to date at Flushing Meadows when he beat Roger Federer in the 2009 final, has not played a match on tour since February and went under the knife in March.
The US Tennis Association have confirmed Del Potro, 25, will be replaced in the main draw by 88th-ranked Simone Bolelli of Italy.
Another player struggling with a wrist problem, two-time champion Rafael Nadal, is expected to announce in the coming days whether he will recover in time for the year's final slam, which starts on August 25.
