Andy Murray needs to step up, says John McEnroe

Andy Murray will face Robin Haase in the first round of the US Open, which starts in New York on Monday.

Murray is seeded eighth due to Rafael Nadal's withdrawal, while Dutchman Haase, who has never progressed further than the second round at Flushing Meadows, is currently ranked 70th in the world.

Murray has also been drawn in the same quarter as world No.1 Novak Djokovic, who opens against 80th-ranked Diego Schwartzmann, and the pair could meet in the last eight.

Second seed Roger Federer opens against world No.77 Marinko Matosevic.

Murray, who has not won a tournament since Wimbledon 14 months ago, has faced Haase at the US Open before, when they met in the second round in 2011. Then, Murray came from two sets down to win in five. Haase won their first ever meeting in straight sets in Rotterdam six years ago, while Murray eased past Haase at last year's Australian Open.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Murray en route to winning the Toronto Masters earlier this month, is likely to be the British No.1's fourth-round opponent, while the likes of Stan Wawrinka, Tommy Robredo, Milos Raonic and Kei Nishikori could lie in wait in the last four.

One notable first round tie features Tomas Berdych and former world No.1 Lleyton Hewitt.

Federer, meanwhile, will relish being in the opposite side of the draw to both Murray and Djokovic, who beat the 17-time grand slam champion in the Wimbledon at final two months ago.
