Djokovic eases into third round
Novak Djokovic dropped just four games as he swept aside the challenge of Paul-Henri Mathieu in 88 minutes to move into the third round of the US Open.
The world No.1 kept himself on track for a fifth straight final in New York, beating Mathieu 6-1 6-3 6-0.
Mathieu, ranked No.81 in the world, struggled in the windy conditions during the first set, serving seven doubles faults.
He made a better fist of it in the second but blew a chance to break for 3-2, watching a forehand clip the net and drop just wide.
The Frenchman was made to pay immediately when Djokovic broke and the Serb went on to take the second set, before wrapping up the third without losing a game.
"It's very windy but I managed to adjust to the conditions," Djokovic said afterwards. "I managed to play better in the important moments, to stay solid and use my serve with accuracy rather than speed. I'm very happy with my performance overall."
Djokovic next faces American Sam Querrey, who beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-4 6-4.
Elsewhere, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga secured a comfortable 6-3 6-4 6-4 win against Aleksandr Nedovyesov.
Kei Nishikori was two sets to the good when Pablo Andujar was forced to retire, while American John Isner progressed with a 7-6(5) 6-4 6-2 win over Jan-Lennard Struff.
Isner will take on German Philipp Kohlschreiber - the man who has knocked him out of the US Open at the same stage for the past two years.
