Cilic sees off Berdych to reach first slam semi since 2010

Marin Cilic upset sixth seed Tomas Berdych to reach his first grand slam semi-final in more than four years with a straight sets victory in their US Open last eight clash.

Cilic enjoyed a 6-2 6-4 7-6(4) victory against Berdych in just over two hours on court Arthur Ashe, and fought back from a break down twice in the final set to edge it on a tie-break.

He missed last year's US Open due to a doping ban, having tested positive for a banned stimulant - which he said he had ingested unintentionally.

The Croat, who is the 14th seed at Flushing Meadows, will face either Roger Federer or Gael Monfils on Saturday in his first major semi-final since the 2010 Australian Open.

"It was a truly amazing day for me," Cilic said. "It was very gutsy in difficult conditions.

"I adjusted better than Tomas and I could rely on my serve. I played pretty good tactically and I am pretty happy with everything."

"I've tough times over the last couple of years and I'm really happy that things are working out. I'm enjoying my time on the court."

Elsewhere in New York, Bob and Mike Bryan won another tough three-set match to move within one victory of their 16th grand slam title. The top-seeded twins beat fellow Americans Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram 6-4 4-6 6-3 in their semi-final on Thursday.

The Bryans are seeking their fifth US Open championship and 100th career doubles title. They have not won a major tournament since 2013 Wimbledon.

The unseeded Lipsky and Ram were playing in their first grand slam semi-final after upsetting third-seeded Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic in the third round.

The Bryan brothers saved two break points at 2-2 in the final set, then broke in the next game when Lipsky double-faulted.
