Serena Williams faces a race against time to be fit for the US Open after undergoing surgery on her injured right foot.

The world No. 1 cut her foot on some broken glass at a restaurant last week and will now miss three hardcourt tournaments in Istanbul, Cincinnati and Montreal as a result.

With the final Grand Slam of the season starting at Flushing Meadows on August 30 - just two weeks after the Rogers Cup gets underway in Montreal - the American will have little preparation time before bidding to win the US Open for a fourth time.

"I'm so upset I won't be able to play in the upcoming events because of this foot surgery," Williams told the WTA Tour website. "Thank you for all of your support. I can't wait to get back on the courts."

It has been a difficult year in terms of injuries for the 28-year-old - she has only competed in six events this season. After winning the Australian Open at the start of the year she beat Vera Zvonareva for the Wimbledon title but she has not played on the WTA Tour since.
