Rain brings a halt to Schiavone's charge

British No. 3 Anne Keothavong will resume her rain-interrupted match with Francesca Schiavone on Tuesday needing a much-improved performance if she is to progress to the second round of the Istanbul Cup.
Keothavong was immediately in trouble as she lost her first service game and Schiavone, the French Open champion, earned another break to cement a 4-0 lead before the heavens opened to halt her charge.
Stefanie Voegele caused an upset by knocking out fourth seed Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4 7-6(5). Shvedova struggled to impose her second serve on her opponent allowing Voegele to capitalise on anything short. The second set ebbed and flowed as both players earned three breaks apiece but it was Voegele who held firm to edge it on a tie-break.
Andrea Petkovic bounced back from her disappointing exit at the Nurnberger Gastein Ladies event in Austria to overpower Pemra Ozgen 6-2 6-1 in just over an hour. The German No. 1 accumulated 12 break point chances but only needed to convert five of them on her way to a straightforward victory.
It was not quite so easy for defending champion Vera Dushevina who was pushed hard by Petra Martic. The Russian only won two out of 10 points on her second serve in a poor first set but she pulled her game together to take the next two sets to progress 2-6 7-5 6-3.
Meanwhile at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic was in fine form as she beat Alisa Kleybanova 6-3 6-2 . Entering the match, Ivanovic had lost in three of the four previous meetings between the pair.
There was late drama on Monday as Kimiko Date Krumm ousted Dinara Safina in an epic three-setter. Krumm, 39, lost the first set but rallied back to close out a 4-6 7-6(0) 6-2 victory.
