Andy Murray continued to serve poorly but eventually cruised to a comfortable 7-6 6-1 victory over Alejandro Falla in the quarter-finals of the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles.

Murray managed to land just 42% of his first serves in and again relied on his dominant return to see off the Colombian in their first meeting to progress safely to the last four where he will face Spain's Feliciano Lopez.

After edging the first set in a tie-breaker, Murray dropped serve in the first game of the second to make another three-set contest look likely following his protracted second round opener. But he then found top gear and won six straight games to clinch victory in just over an hour and a half.

Lopez beat American James Blake in a hard-fought 3-6 7-6 6-4 contest in the summer heat. Lopez has lost to Murray in their previous two meetings and said he is expecting another tough match this time around: "Since the first time I saw him, I realised he was a very talented player and would be one of the best players in the world."

On the other side of the draw, second seed Sam Querrey scraped past Rainer Schuettler by the finest of margins in an energy-sapping 6-2 3-6 7-6 epic. Big-serving Querrey managed 14 aces, many of which came at crucial moments as Schuettler capitalised on only five of the 16 break points he created.

Querrey will now face sixth seed Janko Tipsarevic, who toppled third seed Marcos Baghdatis 6-3 7-5.
