Andy Roddick has cruised through his second round contest at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C., seeing off qualifier Grega Zemlja 6-4 6-4.

Roddick's big serve was never threatened and he did enough on return to earn a break in each set. He said he was happy with the straight-forward hit-out.

"I accomplished what I wanted to," Roddick said. "I got into some rallies early and moved the ball around the court and mixed up paces and different heights. I put a high percentage of returns in the court and got back to playing clean tennis. Doing things that don't always show up on the stats sheet but they win you tennis matches."

It was a safe day for the big seeds, although they didn't all have it so easy. Fernando Verdasco beat Michael Berrer 4-6 7-5 7-6 in a near-three-hour epic, as even the deciding tie-break wne to 8-6.

Wimbledon marathon man John Isner came out on top in a serve-fest - the type of match he commonly features in - against Thiemo de Bakker. The American won 7-6 7-6, as de Bakker squandered the only break point in the match in the first set. Fourth seed Marin Cilic had a solid 6-4 6-2 win over Denis Istomin.

James Blake's conqueror, Ryan Sweeting, progressed after knocking out Michael Llodra 6-4 6-2 while there were also wins for Xavier Malisse, Mardy Fish and Gilles Simon.

In the first round, Janko Tipsarevic tipped out Arnaud Clement, and Alejandro Falla and Marco Chiudinelli won through. An injury to Richard Gasquet put Kristof Vliegen into the second round.
