Andy Roddick has been forced to withdraw from the Rogers Cup with a mystery illness.

The American No. 1, who dropped out of the top ten for the first time in three years this week, complained of exhaustion last week, and has not recovered in time to play in Toronto.

Roddick was scheduled to play world No. 44 Lu Yen-hsun in the second round, the man who pulled off an impressive upset against the American in the fourth round at Wimbledon this year. He has been replaced in the draw by France's Paul-Henri Mathieu.

In a statement on his website, Roddick confirmed he was not feeling well enough to play in Toronto.

"Following Washington DC, I was not feeling a hundred percent and returned to Austin," he said. "As of this morning, I still do not feel well enough to compete in Toronto. I am disappointed to be missing the Rogers Cup."

Following his third round defeat to Gilles Simon at the Legg Mason Classic in Washington DC last week, Roddick said he felt lethargic and would undergo tests and would not play again until he was fully fit.

"First and foremost I'm going to test for something," he said. I'm going to get that off my plate first. I promise you I'm going to figure this out."
