Vera Zvonareva secured a huge upset at the Rogers Cup by dumping Kim Clijsters out at the quarter-final stage.

Clijsters dropped only one set on her way to taking the title in Cincinnati last week, and she looked set to continue that storming run as she took the first 6-2.

Zvonareva hadn't read the script, however, and battled back to record only her second career win over the Belgian by clinching the second 6-3 and the third 6-2.

The Wimbledon finalist will now meet tenth seed Victoria Azarenka, who saved four set points to secure a 6-2 7-6(6) win over Marion Bartoli.

World No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki avenged her defeat to French Open champion Francesca Schiavone to reach the last four in Montreal.

Wozniacki lost in straight sets to Schiavone in Paris, but showed impressive power to defeat the Italian 6-2 6-3. Last year's US Open finalist fired seven aces to set up a semi-final clash with Svetlana Kuznetsova.

The Russian extended her unbeaten run against Zheng Jie to six matches as she cruised to a 6-1 6-3 triumph in 74 minutes. Both players have been plagued by inconsistency this year, but Kuznetsova showed no signs of her difficulties as she put in a commanding performance, sealing six breaks of serve in the process.
