Laura Robson has qualified for the main draw at the HP Open in Osaka after defeating veteran Catalina Castano in straight sets.

The British starlet's Japanese sojourn has been a significant step in her fledgling career, with this tournament now marking her second WTA Tour appearance on foreign soil after the recent event in Tokyo.

The 6-3 6-3 victory over Colombian Castano was something of an upset with the 31-year-old ranked 45 places higher than Robson, putting her as the second seed in the qualifying draw.

But Robson overcame a 15-year experience disadvantage to hit Castano off the court, breaking her five times in total.

Meanwhile, the main draw got underway as top seed and defending champion Sam Stosur thrashed local wildcard Sachie Ishizu 6-0 6-3.

There were also wins for second seed Marion Bartoli and fourth seed Maria Kirilenko, while fifth seed Alla Kudryavtseva was eliminated at the first hurdle by United States' Coco Vandeweghe.
