Andy Murray outclassed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to ease into the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters.

The world No. 4 was a class apart from his opponent and needed less than an hour to wrap up a comfortable 6-2 6-2 victory.

No. 12 seed Tsonga had not dropped a set en route to the last eight, but he never troubled Murray, who burst out of the blocks and never let up. His aggressive outlook was rewarded with an early break and with the help of a consistent serve Murray breezed into the semi-finals with two breaks in either set.

It was a confident display from the British No. 1, and Tsonga had no response to Murray's combination of aggression and measured defence.

Murray struggled past Tsonga in four sets at the same stage at Wimbledon, but the Frenchman is on the comeback from a knee injury and was no match for a supremely confident Murray, who converted all four of his break point opportunities.

"I served really well," Murray told Sky Sports. "Jo was struggling a bit with his serve, he wasn't serving as big as normal so I was able to get into a lot of the return games - I've served really well all week.

"It was a good performance - I hit the ball really cleanly from the back and the surface here is really good for me."

With top seed Rafael Nadal out, Murray will be the favourite to reach the final. The British No. 1 will meet Juan Monaco in the semi-finals after the Argentine outlasted Nadal's conqueror Jurgen Melzer 6-7(6) 7-5 6-2.
