Dementieva hangs up her racket
World No. 9 Elena Dementieva has retired from tennis at the age of 29.
The Russian made the shock announcement at the WTA Championships in Doha after her straight-sets defeat to Francesca Schiavone. In an emotional ceremony, Dementieva called time on a 12-year career in which she won 16 titles.
"I would like to thank all the players for an amazing experience and some wonderful memories," Dementieva said. "It's very emotional.
"I would like to thank all the people round the world that have supported me throughout my career and especially my fan club, you were always there for me. No matter winning or losing, I could always feel your support so thank you for your devotion."
Dementieva reached a career high ranking of No. 3 last season and won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
