Roger Federer admitted he was "shocked" to beat Andy Murray so easily at the ATP World Tour Finals in London on Tuesday.

Federer defeated the British No. 1 6-4 6-2 to leave Murray in danger of failing to qualify for the semi-finals of the year-end event. The Scot must now beat David Ferrer in his last round-robin match and then await Robin Soderling's efforts in his remaining games.

None of that is likely to concern Murray right now, after he delivered a hugely lacklustre performance against a man he had beaten in his previous two encounters. Entering the contest as favourite, Murray did not find consistency in any aspect of his game, summed up by his trademark drop shot, which failed on both occasions he opted to use it.

Most staggering of all, Federer only lost eight points on serve in the entire match, and the world No. 2 - who looks in fantastic form - confessed he had expected a tougher examination.

"It's strange, Andy's a good returner, one of the best we have in the game," Federer told Sky Sports 1. "On first serves, second serves, he's got many options.

"I'm quite surprised today, a bit shocked, but obviously very happy. I'm happy I'm playing so well."

Federer's qualification for the last four will be cemented if Ferrer beats Soderling on Tuesday evening, or if Soderling wins in three sets.
