Andy Murray has played down his chances in his semi-final against Rafael Nadal at the ATP World Tour Finals, insisting that he does not expect to beat the Spaniard.

The world No. 1 has looked in ominous form at the season-ending tournament, racing through the group stage with victories over Tomas Berdych, Novak Djokovic and Andy Roddick.

Nadal, who failed to reach the last four in 2009, is playing with the fierce determination of a man eager to end a glorious year on a high note - as demonstrated by a 7-6(3) 6-1 destruction of Berdych on Friday.

Now Murray has been handed the unenviable task of halting Nadal's charge - a hurdle he admits may be too difficult to overcome.

"I'll try to win but I'm not sure I've got a whole lot of chance if I play against him," Murray said. "He's obviously the best player in the world. I've watched his matches here, he's been playing unbelievably well."

The Scot admits that he "needs" to get a significant victory over Nadal under his belt if he is to achieve his aim of lifting a grand slam title. "I don't seem to beat those guys in the big matches," he said. "So I'm going to have to play my best tennis against him to win. I need to do it in a big match, in the semis."
