Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova dropped just one game as she beat Iveta Benesova 6-1 6-0 to book her place in the second round. Pavlyuchenkova will now face top seed Elena Dementieva who was given a bye in the opening round.

Italian fourth seed Francesca Schiavone enjoyed a flawless 6-0 6-0 victory over Russian qualifier Vesna Manasieva. She will now face Lucie Safarova who eased past Tamira Paszek 6-0 6-3.

In the Pattaya Open in Thailand, top seed Vera Zvonareva progressed through to the second round with a 6-3 6-2 victory over fellow Russian Ksenia Pervak, while home favourite Tamarine Tanasurgarn overcame Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1 6-2. German eighth seed Julia Goerges defeated Greek qualifier Anna Gerasimou 6-4 6-4 to set up a second-round meeting with Kazakhstan's Sesil Karantantcheva who beat home qualifier Suchanan Viratprasert 6-1 7-5.

Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova took over an hour and forty minutes to get past Ayumi Morita. The fourth-seed served six aces in the 6-2 6-4 triumph over the 19-year-old Japanese up-and-comer, who created seven break point opportunities but only managed to convert one.
