Kim Clijsters has beaten Caroline Wozniacki to the 2010 WTA Player of the Year award, despite finishing the season below the Dane in the world rankings.

Wozniacki topped the year-end rankings for the first time in her career, but she is still to win a maiden grand slam, and the youngster also lost out to Clijsters in the final of the WTA Championships in Doha.

Clijsters claimed her third US Open title in 2010 and finished the year as world No. 3, having emerged from retirement in 2009.

"It's really nice to win the Player of the Year award just one year after making a comeback and while I didn't think it would come so quickly, I am thrilled with the news," she said.

The WTA Newcomer of the Year award went to Petra Kvitova, who rose to 34th in the world rankings. Kvitova, who is 20 years of age, also reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

Elsewhere, Justine Henin was handed the Comeback Player of the Year, while the now-retired Elena Dementieva took home the Karen Krantzcke Sportsmanship award, acknowledging a player's attitude towards the game.
