No. 1 seed Elena Dementieva eased into the quarter-finals of the GDF Suez Open with a routine 6-4 6-4 win over fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. There were eight breaks of serve in all, with Dementieva converting five of the six break points she earned to close out the match to move into the last eight.

Dementieva has been joined in the last eight by Tatiana Garbin, who defeated No. 8 seed Elena Vesnina in a yo-yo three set encounter. Garbin took the first set but then completely lost her way in the second, before Vesnina did likewise in a disappointing final set that had promised so much more.

Flavia Pennetta had no such problems against Alisa Kleybanova of Russia, coming through a tight first set tie-breaker in order to breeze through the second set for a 7-6(4) 6-1 victory. Pennetta was strong against the Kleybanova serve, creating 13 break opportunities throughout the contest, taking five in order to advance.

Petra Martic caused the first major shock with a 6-4 3-6 7-5 first-round win over No. 3 seed Yanina Wickmayer. The Croatian showed excellent battling qualities in the first set as she was second best in most departments but secured the one break of serve that mattered. Wickmayer found her stride in the second and four aces helped her to force a decider, but she was not able to overwhelm her rival in the final set and tumbled out of the tournament after a contest that lasted almost two and a half hours.

Aravane Rezai saw her serve broken on two occasions but was still good enough to ease into the second round with a 6-4 6-4 win over Evgeniya Rodina.

At the Pattaya Open in Thailand, No. 2 seed Sabine Lisicki was sent tumbling out of the tournament at the second round stage by Tamarine Tanasugarn who won 6-3 3-6 7-5.

Yaroslava Shvedova eased past Chanelle Scheepers 7-6 6-3 to move into round three, while eighth seed Julia Goerges was crushed 6-2 6-1 by Sesil Karatantcheva.

In first-round action, Sybille Bammer produced a battling display to see off Marina Erakovic 7-6 7-5. The first went to a tie-break which went to the fifth seed 10-8 and the second set was equally hard fought and saw just one break of serve as Bammer took over two hours to claim victory.

Vera Dushevina claimed a 6-4 6-2 win over Galina Voskoboeva, while sixth seed Sania Mirza was topped 3-6 6-4 6-3 by Tatjana Malek. Seventh seed Kimiko Date Krumm was trailing 6-1 1-0 when she opted to retire, handing Anastasia Rodionova a place in round two.
