Andy Murray will be the only British representative in the men's draw of the Australian Open after British No. 2 James Ward failed in his attempts to qualify.

After heavy rain disrupted the schedule at Melbourne Park, Ward, ranked 207 in the world, fell in the first round of qualifying against Chile's Paul Capdeville 6-3 6-4.

He started badly, failing to hold his opening service game, and seven double faults did not help his cause as he was broken five times.

British women Anne Keothavong, Heather Watson and Katie O'Brien start their qualifying campaigns on Thursday.
