BNP Paribas Open seedings

Ana Ivanovic's serve collapsed badly as she lost to Marion Bartoli in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open on Wednesday.

Ivanovic, the No. 19 seed, served up six double faults on her way to a 6-4 7-6(4) defeat to Bartoli, who thoroughly deserved her victory.

Bartoli had been handed a reprieve after Kim Clijsters retired when leading by a set in her previous match. The 15th seed was determined to take full advantage, and she attacked the Ivanovic serve at every opportunity at Indian Wells.

Ivanovic certainly aided her French opponent with a 51 per cent first-serve success rate, which led to seven breaks in the contest. Her troubles were evident from the very start of the match, conceding break points in both her opening service games.

To her credit Ivanovic forced six breaks of her own, but she was always fighting an uphill battle as she eventually crashed out in a shade over two hours.

Both of Wednesday's quarters went the way of the underdog, Yanina Wickmayer completing an unlikely double by easing past world No.12 Shahar Peer 6-3 6-3.

No. 25-ranked Wickmayer edged ahead of Peer 3-2 in their career meetings with this latest victory in which she was dominant at both ends of the court.
