Venus to miss Miami as injury woe continues

Venus Williams has withdrawn from next week's Sony Ericsson Open in Miami due to an abdominal strain.

The injury forced Williams to retire from her third-round clash with Andrea Petkovic at the Australian Open, and she has not competed subsequently.

Williams is a three-time winner in Miami, but she fell at the final hurdle against Kim Clijsters last year.

"I am very sorry to not be playing in the Sony Ericsson Open this year," Williams said. "It is one of my favourite tournaments on the circuit, especially because it is so close to my home in Florida. I look forward to returning to the tour soon."

Her younger sister, reigning Wimbledon champion Serena Williams, has not set a date for her return after being hospitalised with a blood clot on the lung.
