World No. 1 Roger Federer has pulled out of the Dubai Open due to a lung infection. The Swiss player fell ill last week and has failed to recover to an extent that would have allowed him to compete.

Federer is a three-time winner of the ATP Tournament, which begins on Monday. Had he played a part, it would have been the 28-year-old's first competitive appearance since winning the Australian Open title in January.

Instead, Federer may now return at the BNP Paribas Open in March - also rumoured to be the site of Rafael Nadal's comeback after the knee injury that necessitated his withdrawal from the Melbourne Grand Slam.

World No. 2 Novak Djokovic takes over as the top seed in Dubai, where Andy Murray will compete.
