Watson closes in on Estoril spot

Heather Watson is one match away from the main draw of the Estoril Open in Portugal after a straight-sets victory over Poland's Katarzyna Piter.

Watson, who reached her first WTA Tour quarter-final in Auckland earlier this year, was gifted a place in the second qualifying round following her opponent's retirement on Saturday.

But the British No. 3 needed no helping hand as she fired eight aces on her way to a comfortable 6-4 6-4 victory against a player ranked more than 100 places below her.

It was not a flawless performance from the world No. 125, who was broken four times, but enough to see her set up a clash with top seed Tamira Paszek for a place in the main draw.
