Caroline Wozniacki cruised into the next round at the Rome Open after a straight sets victory against Anastasia Rodionova.

The top seed was not on top form, conceding six break points to the Romanian qualifier during the course of the contest, but she avoided a major slip before soon working out her opponent's game - eventually winning easily, 6-2 6-0.

It was a simple enough contest for the Dane, although she will be aware that sterner tests await her.

Elsewhere, Sam Stosur remains on course for a rematch against French Open champion Francesca Schiavone after booking her place in the third round of the tournament.

Stosur was denied a maiden grand slam title at Roland Garros by the Italian last year, and the pair are on a collision course to meet in the quarter-finals.

It is likely to be Stosur's last tournament before the French Open kicks off on May 22, and the Australian looked impressive as she eased into the third round. The sixth seed dropped just 12 points as she raced through the opening set against Iveta Benesova before wrapping up a routine 6-1 7-5 victory.

Her route to the last-eight opened up after 12th seed Andrea Petkovic was sent crashing out by Polona Hercog. The German has claimed victories over the likes of world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams, Jelena Jankovic and Maria Sharapova this season, but has struggled to settle on the clay.

After a second-round exit in Madrid last week, Petkovic will go into next week's Strasbourg International with just four wins from three clay-court tournaments under her belt.

Daniela Hantuchova is the only woman who could prevent second seed Schiavone reaching the quarter-finals after the Slovakian defeated Italian wildcard Romina Oprandi 7-5 6-1.

Fourth seed Li Na booked her place in round three with a 6-4 6-2 win against Lourdes Dominguez Lino while fifth seed Jelena Jankovic also enjoyed comfortable progress with a 6-0 6-3 win over Lucie Safarova.

Later in the day, Ana Ivanovic suffered a disappointing defeat to Yanina Wickwayer, while Marion Bartoli was upset by Anabel Medina Garrigues.

However, Jankovic and Victoria Azarenka avoided defeat with victories in a comfortable manner similar to Wozniacki's.
