Roger Federer has pulled out of the Gerry Weber Open in Germany with a groin injury.

The world No. 3 was beaten in the French Open final by Rafael Nadal, and the Swiss is feeling the effects of a gruelling two weeks in Paris.

Federer was due to play fellow former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt in a rematch of last year's final in Halle, but Federer is not willing to risk his fitness ahead of Wimbledon as he bids to win a seventh title at the All England Club.

"I am very disappointed as it's one of my absolute favourite tournaments on the ATP Tour, but my body, especially my groin, really needs a rest," Federer said in a statement on his website. "After talking with my team this morning, I feel that it's way too risky to take a chance on aggravating it even more before Wimbledon."

Federer won four straight Gerry Weber titles from 2003-06.
