Roddick sneaks through at Queen's
Andy Roddick celebrated his return to the world's top ten by sneaking past Feliciano Lopez in three sets at the AEGON Championships.
Roddick's 7-6(2) 6-7(5) 6-4 second-round win was his first on the ATP Tour in three months, having struggled with a shoulder injury and loss of form.
But back on his favourite surface, the three-time Wimbledon runner-up showed glimpses of his best on serve, surrendering just one break in the match.
His defensive game will need some work, however, as he let 35 Lopez aces fly past him across two hours and 13 minutes of action.
In contrast, No. 12 seed Juan Martin del Potro needed a mere 82 minutes to dismiss Denis Istomin 6-4 6-2 and reach the second round at Queen's for only the second time in his career. The 2009 US Open Champion, who has climbed from world No. 484 in February to No. 22, claimed four breaks and lost just six points on his first serve during an authoritative performance.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has the game to mount a real challenge on grass and he fired out an early statement of intent with a 6-0 6-1 mauling of Michael Berrer.
Former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian, out of action since March due to a leg injury and hernia, showed no signs of rustiness as he swatted away Illya Marchenko 6-3 6-4, sealing a break of serve in each set.
Xavier Malisse booked a showdown with Andy Murray by defeating Matthias Bachinger 6-4 6-4.
The No. 7 seed Fernando Verdasco is not at home on the grass, but negotiated his way into the third round with a 6-2 6-3 win over Nicolas Mahut.
Kevin Anderson took out Ivo Karlovic in straight sets, while there were wins for Radek Stepanek, Adrian Mannarino, Janko Tipsarevic, Matthew Ebden and Michael Russell.
At the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, fifth seed Victor Troicki blitzed Mischa Zverev in 52 minutes to avenge the defeat he suffered last time they met.
Elsewhere, exciting prospect Milos Raonic, widely tipped as a dark horse for Wimbledon, justified his rapidly-growing reputation with a 6-3 6-1 demolition of Pablo Andujar, who gave Rafael Nadal a few problems at the French Open.
Tomas Berdych was tested to the full before overcoming Ruben Bemelmans 5-7 7-6(8) 6-4.
