Surprise win for Broady at AEGON Classic

Britain's Naomi Broady beat Caroline Garcia to reach the second round of the AEGON Classic in Birmingham.

Broady is down at 231 in the world, but she raised her game on home soil to take out a player ranked 81 places ahead of her 6-2 6-7(5) 6-4.

There were further shocks, as No. 1 seed Kaia Kanepi was beaten 6-4 6-2 by Arina Rodionova, while the No. 5 seed Roberto Vinci was toppled in three sets by Mirjana Lucic.

The No. 9 seed Ayumi Morita came through a third-set tiebreak to beat Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3 3-6 7-6(4), while 11th seed Yaroslava Shvedova eased past Zheng Jie.

There were first-round wins for Christina McHale, Andrea Hlavackova, Misaki Doi and Casey Dellacqua.

The No. 14 seed Magdalena Rybarikova was the first player to reach round three, with the Slovak dropping just three games in beating Coco Vandeweghe 6-2 6-1.

At the Sony Ericsson Open in Copenhagen, No. 1 seed and world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki breezed past Irina Falconi.

The No. 4 seed Lucie Safarova battled through in three sets but Jelena Dokic was beaten by Galina Voskoboeva.
