James Ward claimed the biggest win of his career with a surprise win over Stanislas Wawrinka in the second round of the AEGON Championships at Queen's.

Ward took out fellow Brit Daniel Cox in the first round, but was given little chance of progressing any further as No. 4 seed Wawrinka stood in his way.

However, the world 216, who is 202 places below Wawrinka in the rankings, defied expectations by matching the Swiss blow for blow in the first set before asserting in the second.

The first set was all about serve, as neither player offered up any break points. Ward showed the greater composure in the tiebreak and the confidence boost saw him attack Wawrinka in the second.

Ward was again flawless on serve and he translated one of the six break points he worked against the Wawrinka serve to claim a 7-6(3) 6-3 win.

"Obviously it's his first match on grass, so I have to put things into perspective," Ward said. "He's a great player, but it is his first match, and I've been playing a week [at the ATP Challenger Tour event] in Nottingham last week as well to warm up for the tournament, which I think has helped me."

Andy Murray teamed up with his brother Jamie in the doubles, but they were beaten 6-3 6-4 by Ken Skupski and Xavier Malisse - the latter will face Murray in the singles.
