Andy Murray produced his best performance yet to smother the challenge of Richard Gasquet to reach the quarter-finals for a fourth consecutive year at Wimbledon.

The fourth seed, who battled from two sets and a break down to beat Gasquet at the same stage three years ago, did not drop his serve as he strode to a 7-6(3) 6-3 6-2 victory.

In sweltering conditions on Centre Court, Gasquet started brightly, but was unable to find a breakthrough, as Murray stayed in touch before grabbing his chance to snatch the opening set on a tiebreak.

Opportunities were few and far between as the pair slugged it out in the heat, but it was Gasquet's serve that cracked first, as Murray broke for a 5-3 lead in the second set when a Gasquet return sailed long.

As Gasquet's resistance melted in the heat, the British No. 1 tightened his grip on the match, producing a superb forehand winner to put one foot in the last eight before streaking away to victory with a second break of serve.

After sealing his place in the quarter-finals in a little over two hours, the Scot made an impromtu bow in the direction of the Royal Box, where Prince William and his new wife Kate were watching.

Murray will fancy his chances of reaching the semi-finals for a third straight year after learning he will face the unseeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the last-eight. Lopez will also be feeling the effects of a gruelling five-setter after he was forced to battle from two sets down to beat Lukasz Kubot 3-6 6-7(5) 7-6(7) 7-5 7-5.
