Bledisloe Cup: Australia v New Zealand
All Blacks eye century against Wallabies
August 16, 2013

Most Wins By One Test Team Over Another

  • 99 New Zealand v Australia
  • 73 England v Ireland
  • 71 England v Scotland
  • 67 Wales v Scotland
  • 66 Scotland v Ireland
  • 65 Wales v Ireland
  • 57 Fiji v Tonga

The All Blacks sit poised to raise a century of Test rugby wins over Australia, but they are taking nothing for granted.

Victory in the Rugby Championship-opening Bledisloe Cup Test at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Saturday will see New Zealand become the first international rugby team to reach that mark against another. The statistic is no major surprise given there have been more trans-Tasman Tests (146) than in any other international rivalry, but the All Blacks' grip on the Wallabies over the past decade has turned the relationship back into an increasingly one-sided one.

Best Winning Percentages (rivalries more than 50 Tests)

  • 75.9 New Zealand v France (won 41 of 54 Tests)
  • 67.8 New Zealand v Australia (99 of 146)
  • 66.3 Fiji v Tonga (57 of 86)
  • 60.9 France v Ireland (56 of 92)
  • 57.5 England v Ireland (73 of 127)
  • 57.0 France v Scotland (49 of 86)

New Zealand have won nearly 68% of their total Tests against Australia, the second-best record of teams who have met more than 50 times. Only New Zealand-France is more lopsided.

New Zealand lock Sam Whitelock says, however, that their 23 wins from 30 Wallabies Tests since reclaiming the Bledisloe Cup in 2003 is no reason for undue confidence in the three-match series this series. The arrival of new Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie in place of Robbie Deans has him wary.

"You change the coach of any team, whether it be at under-fives, it provides them with something new," he said. "If you went in there thinking nothing's going to change, you'd get egg on your face."
