All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw could be fit to face the Springboks in what could be the Rugby Championship decider.

The flanker sustained a knee injury against Argentina on September 7 but took part in a gym session on Monday and the Kiwis are hopeful he could be fit to face the Boks on October 5. The Springboks have lost just one match in the Championship so far, a 29-15 defeat in Auckland to the Kiwis, while the All Blacks are unbeaten.

If both sides win their Tests this weekend then it could be a case of winner takes all when the two teams meet in Cape Town in just under a fortnight's time.

"He's progressing a little bit quicker than we expected which is why he's here," All Blacks assistant coach Ian Foster said, speaking of McCaw. "There's a bit more ground to cover. This week is important for him to carry on that progress. The signs are really positive. He's certainly in a good space.

"Having a positive attitude towards your rehab is vital but that's something shared by all our boys. He's done everything right and I know he's very determined to come back and contribute on the park. That's certainly helped things."

And the All Blacks are also optimistic Aaron Cruden will be fit to face the Pumas on Saturday. Foster added: "He's tracking very well so we expect him to be good to go.

"We'll get through Monday and Tuesday and make that final assessment but signs are very positive. He brings a lot of composure and confidence."
