South Africa could be without lock Flip van der Merwe for the Rugby Championship decider against New Zealand after he was cited for foul play.

Van der Merwe faces a Sanzar judicial hearing after he was alleged to have punched or struck winger Joe Tomane in the Springboks' 28-8 win over Australia in Cape Town on Sunday (AEST).

Referee Jerome Garces showed Van der Merwe a yellow card after the incident, which occurred just before half-time.

However the citing commissioner, after viewing the footage, deemed that it met the red card threshold for foul play.

South Africa host competition leaders and defending champions New Zealand in Johannesburg next Sunday in the final round.

The Springboks need to win with a bonus point, while also depriving the All Blacks of a bonus point, to lift the title.
