Hurricanes fly-half Beauden Barrett has been declared fit to return from a knee injury in this weekend's clash with the Highlanders in Napier.

Barrett has been sidelined since the Hurricanes' Round 12 victory over the Crusaders when he sustained a grade-two medial ligament tear. The Super Rugby ladder-leaders had done an excellent job in his absence until last Friday's return clash with the Crusaders, a match the Wellington-based side lost 35-18.

But they will now almost certainly regain Barrett for another New Zealand derby, this time against the in-form Highlanders, after the fly-half came through training on Tuesday without any apparent discomfort. Barrett's likely return means rising playmaker Otere Black can make his way to Italy to join up with the New Zealand Under 20s side at the Junior World Championship.

Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd will confirm his line-up for the clash with the Highlanders later this week.
