Juan Martin Hernandez will miss the Rugby Championship-opening Test between New Zealand and Argentina, with Pumas coach Daniel Hourcade deciding to rest the backline star in naming a 28-man squad to travel to Christchurch.

Hourcade wanted to give Hernandez a break after busy season in Europe with Rugby Champions Cup winners Toulon. The coach decided also to rest Tomas Lavanini, Pablo Matera and Leonardo Senatore as he monitors the fitness and welfare of his squad ahead of the Rugby World Cup and.

"We are following the plan we had set out and picking based on how each player is," Hourcade said as he named the squad to face the All Blacks.

"We have an individual plan, there are players who are in a preparation period and others with niggles, and we don't want to risk them. So it was down to this, the minutes played and the recovery time from the end of the season that we picked the squad.

"After the game against New Zealand we'll meet back up in Buenos Aires for three days and then we'll decide on the squad for Australia, continuing to manage the minutes, and rotate players so they arrive at the World Cup with the right number of games but still being conscious of the fact we are taking on three global powers.

"We have to make sure the team is strong, but also follow the plan we've laid out." New Zealand and Argentina will also play each other in the World Cup, in their opening match of the tournament at Wembley Stadium on September 20.

Argentina squad: Horacio Agulla, Matias Alemanno, Marcos Ayerza, Marcelo Bosch, Manuel Carizza, Santiago Cordero, Agustin Creevy, Tomás Cubelli, Jeronimo De la Fuente, Matias Diaz, Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe, Lucas Gonzalez Amorosino, Santiago Gonzalez Iglesias, Ramiro Herrera, Juan Imhoff, Facundo Isa, Martín Landajo, Juan Manuel Leguizamon, Benjamin Macome, Julian Montoya, Matias Moroni, Lucas Noguera, Javier Ortega Desio, Guido Petti, Nicolas Sanchez, Juan Pablo Socino, Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro, Joaquin Tucule.
